Care checks
What can I ask an in-person clinic?
Look past the room and the sign. Ask who assesses you, what the visit covers, and what comes next.

Who is responsible for the assessment?
Find out the full name of the clinician deciding on care, along with the kind of licence they hold. Write it down before the visit. If someone else gives a treatment, ask how their role fits the plan.
As of October 3, 2026, Arizona allows certain licensed clinicians to directly supervise shots given by trained medical assistants.
A medical assistant cannot decide on their own which illness you have or what treatment to give.
Does every office need a health-facility licence?
As of October 3, 2026, many private Arizona offices run by licensed health professionals do not need a separate health-facility licence, which is permission for the place itself.
The rules differ for stand-alone urgent-care centres and offices with overnight patients. They also differ for clinics the law defines as pain-management or abortion clinics.
An office where patients are put fully asleep for a procedure also has different rules, with an exception under dental law.
A missing facility listing alone does not establish that an office operates unlawfully.
Ask: does this office need a licence for the place itself? If yes, ask for its licence details. If no, ask which exception applies and why. The clinician’s own licence is a separate check.
What can I ask about the visit itself?
- Will the clinician discuss my concern before proposing a medicine?
- What records can I bring?
- What is included in the visit charge?
- How are questions handled between visits?
What if the explanation feels rushed?
Ask the clinician to pause and explain a term in everyday words. Try: can we go back to why this option is being considered? Bring the discussion back to the concern that led you here.
