What can I ask my insurer or payment plan?
Name the product and explain why it has been prescribed. Ask for the answer that applies to your plan.

What does my plan need to tell me?
Ask whether your plan will pay for the exact medicine and the reason your clinician has given. Then ask what you would pay and what must happen before the pharmacy can supply it.
Formulary means the medicine list used by your plan. Prior authorization is the insurer’s agreement to pay, given in advance.
Keep the plan’s answer with your quote. If it needs more information, ask exactly what the clinician must send.
Does Medicare treat every use the same way?
As of September 26, 2026, Medicare’s usual prescription-drug insurance, called Part D, excludes medicines used for weight loss. It may pay for some other accepted uses of the same medicines.
Even for those other uses, your plan’s medicine list and advance permission still matter. Permission for Medicare to pay does not mean your own plan has agreed to pay for your prescription.
A separate, temporary Medicare Bridge offers certain weight-loss medicines to eligible people at a monthly copay of $50, as of September 26, 2026.
A copay is the part of the cost you pay yourself.
The Bridge is a separate temporary program. The program begins July 1, 2026, with its end set for December 31, 2027. It handles payment separately from your usual Part D prescription-drug insurance.
Ask Medicare: do I qualify for the Bridge, is my exact medicine included, and how can my prescription go through this program? Use the official Medicare links below to check its terms.
Is a savings card the same as a cash offer?
For branded semaglutide and tirzepatide weight-loss drugs, savings cards require private or workplace insurance, as of September 26, 2026.
They exclude people enrolled in government health programmes such as Medicare or Medicaid.
People on Medicare may still qualify for a drug company’s cash price, paid without insurance, even when they cannot use its savings card.
Ask: is this a savings card or a cash price, and do its rules include someone with my insurance? Check that answer before relying on the advertised price.
What about a health savings or flexible spending account?
As of September 26, 2026, the tax rules distinguish care for a diagnosed disease from spending merely intended to improve general health.
Those accounts set aside money for medical costs. Ask your plan administrator whether the expense qualifies and what records it needs.
